When Dari wasn’t able to find a good planner that had everything she was looking for, she decided to create one of her own by using her MyBodyModel croquis to plan out her future sewing projects.

She knew immediately that MyBodyModel was going to be a game changer for planning out her sewing projects. Not only that, but by using her own measurements, she felt like she was finally able to fully bring her designs to life. Here’s what she had to say:

“I was in love when I printed out the pages, and even more in love after I started drawing and coloring in the clothes. As I was drawing, I couldn’t help but remember my youth. When I was younger I loved sketching fashion designs. As you can tell, I have come a long way, and let me tell you, that drawing on the croquis, which was designed after my own measurements, was pretty amazing. I could actually imagine the clothing on me, and it makes a huge difference. A key tip from Mireille: Don’t stress about the details. 🚫

That is where many of us get caught up and feel like sketching is either too much or not in your skill set – which are both untrue. This stage is for exploration and making sure you get the result you desire.

For Mirielle, MyBodyModel allows her to enter into a stage of reflection before starting a new project, even though her mind always resists a little bit. Drawing for visualization has absolutely changed her approach to sewing.

She uses both digital digital and paper croquis fashion templates to explore what style she’s going for, design details, and finalizing all with a fabulous end result.

“Like any practice, progress comes with practice. Try not to stay stuck right at the beginning. Then, just get started, get lost in the process, have fun. Try not to hang on too much on the result and rather cultivate curiosity and an open mind.”

We’ve got the low-down on sewing project planners from Elana! 📋

When Elana needed a way to organize her ideas and stay motivated, she turned to investing in her own personalized planner. Using Microsoft Publisher, Elana was able to create the planner of her dreams, altering it to fit her needs and wants.

She says:

“I designed my own planner using Microsoft Publisher, pulling inspiration from several printable options that weren’t exactly what I wanted. I love that I am able to add my MyBodyModel custom croquis to any page and can make my own sketching layouts.”

She also provides a number of recommendations for readymade options. From there she plans, visualizes, chooses fabric and sketches staying focused but also flexible.

“My personalized sewing planner is in a three ring binder so if plans change, I can just move that project page. When I come back to it later, I know at a glance what I wanted to do. I am a fairly indecisive person who also wants to sew all.the.things, so having this visual system really helps to maximize my sewing time by keeping me focused and cutting down on time between projects.”

She goes on to say:

“I know my system is working because I’ve already completed several projects.”

We have to admit—we LOVE a moodboard as a fun and creative way to plan a wardrobe!

However, akin to fashion mood boards is the cork board approach to planning your seasonal sewing and knitting projects and Sarah is here to tell us all about it!

1.) Once I have decided what I’d like to try and make for a given season, I sit down and sketch all the styles using MyBodyModel. I label each style with the name of the pattern I plan to use and attach them to my cork board. Seeing this board in my sewing room everyday really helps me to stay motivated throughout the season!

2.) Once I start working on a garment I transfer the sketch and swatch to my sewing notebook where I document the making process and keep fitting notes. This is quick and easy because when I first put the sketches and swatches on the corkboard, I just roll up a little piece of Scotch tape and use that to stick them on the board. Then, when I’m ready to put them in my notebook, I just pluck them off and stick them right in the book!

✨And here’s an additional tip for staying inspired!

“I try not to think of my seasonal sewing plans as set in stone – the corkboard is aspirational only! If a new pattern comes out that I’m super excited about, I’ll go ahead and make it. If I’m not feeling a certain garment I had planned to make, I don’t force myself to make it.”

Sarah also started knitting, so she’s been using the corkboard method for her knitting projects as well!

Watercolors vs stamps 🤔

Sometimes pencils and markers can get, well….boring. So, we’ve loved seeing a few guest bloggers try new ways to get their ideas out on paper—watercolors and stamps!

Adding a creative spin to her sketching, Kari used watercolors to color in each one of her looks from her mini-capsule wardrobe. With her initial goal of 24 me-made pieces, Kari found herself close with the help of her body model and what it brings to the sewing game.🎨

While on the other side of the spectrum Leanne brought her sewing bullet journal to life with the help of a stamp. She ordered a 3x2 inch custom acrylic stamp from Etsy. She says that she’s obsessed with using it in her sewing journal. Here’s what she had to say:

“Something about the stamp making it look like I actually drew the croquis, as opposed to it very obviously being something I cut out and glued on, makes the pages seem that much more seamless.”

When it comes to sewing, Ciara has learned that her body is truly unique and no mass-produced croquis is ever going to truly reflect it. Good thing for MyBodyModel’s custom fashion croquis templates using your real body measurements!

Based on the proportions of her unique body she has developed specific preferences for how she prefers to dress. Ciara explains her preferences:

“I don’t think a pronounced sleeve head does my narrow, slightly sloped shoulders any favors. I have a short torso & a prominent belly, so I really prefer waistbands to hit at my natural waist—not too high & not too low. I have long legs, which I think are best showcased by skirts hemmed just above the knee.”

Perfect. Now not only is she aware of her specific proportions, she also knows what she likes and what she doesn’t. She continues:

“I was really impressed with how much my croquis resembled me. I instantly printed out the eight croquis page, because I’m all about rationing paper and I like to see a selection of outfit ideas side-by-side so I can think creatively about how to combine pieces into different outfits. I cracked open my bullet journal to my master list of planned sewing projects & started sketching.”
