What’s your process for planning your makes?

Our friend Kari uses her MyBodyModel to create a sheet of 24 croquis and then does a “brain dump” of what she wants to make.

She explains:

“As a textile designer, my method for generating new content is to cast a wide net for inspiration and widdle it down to my final designs. It’s no different when it comes to my sewing plans. I love all of the layouts included in the MyBodyModel download, but in my crazy mind, 8 max wasn’t enough. I made myself a sheet with 24 croquis so I could basically do a brain dump of what I want to make for fall.”

The MyBodyModel app was a game changer for Kari in that it allows her to see and design for her body. Second, it allows her to sort & filter all of her sewing ideas visually.

“After cramming all of the possible looks onto my sheet of 24, I was able to get an overall picture of what’s working as well as bring me back to my sewing/wardrobe goals. I gravitate towards a classic relaxed fit style where staple pieces like jeans, tees, and layering pieces are the main ingredients.”

What do you get when you combine a MyBodyModel digital body model image with Adobe sketch and a large gap in your closet? Well, for Sierra it meant the opportunity to craft a whole new work wardrobe that is both classic and fun!

Here’s how Sierra got started on her work collection:

“I started to consider what category of my closet I wanted to focus on. I decided that I would tackle clothes that I can wear to work. I spend a lot of my time in an office and the dress code is business casual, which can have a wide range of interpretation. My goal for “The Work Collection” is to make pieces that are comfortable, classic, and funky. I enjoy taking simple styles and adding a little flair to them with fun colors or prints.”

Sierra has sketched out 3 garments so far - a blouse, a wrap dress, and a woven skirt.

“As I continue to make clothes for myself, I look forward to breaking down my planning into categories. I’m sure I will plan makes for active wear, traveling, and lounging. The Work Collection will be the first of many.”

When it comes to sewing, Ciara has learned that her body is truly unique and no mass-produced croquis is ever going to truly reflect it. Good thing for MyBodyModel’s custom fashion croquis templates using your real body measurements!

Based on the proportions of her unique body she has developed specific preferences for how she prefers to dress. Ciara explains her preferences:

“I don’t think a pronounced sleeve head does my narrow, slightly sloped shoulders any favors. I have a short torso & a prominent belly, so I really prefer waistbands to hit at my natural waist—not too high & not too low. I have long legs, which I think are best showcased by skirts hemmed just above the knee.”

Perfect. Now not only is she aware of her specific proportions, she also knows what she likes and what she doesn’t. She continues:

“I was really impressed with how much my croquis resembled me. I instantly printed out the eight croquis page, because I’m all about rationing paper and I like to see a selection of outfit ideas side-by-side so I can think creatively about how to combine pieces into different outfits. I cracked open my bullet journal to my master list of planned sewing projects & started sketching.”

After staring at a closet full of me-made clothes and still having the feeling that she had nothing to wear, Alyssa decided to use the 3x3 template to plan a capsule wardrobe she would actually wear.

Though it can seem like a daunting task to sketch out nine different outfits, Alyssa offers encouraging words:

“I don’t worry too much about getting it just right, instead using that time to experiment, visualize, and just have fun.”

When curating your perfect wardrobe designs, sketching is the first step – and last for many. Don’t let the nerves of not being an artist scare you away from creating your pieces, anyone can draw as long as you have an idea.
